Solar Power, Dignity, and Brighter Days at Fountain of Hope

A major step forward has been taken at Fountain of Hope, one that strengthens care, dignity, and opportunity for the young people who call the center home. With the generous support of Volunteer Zambia, Durham University, and the University of St Andrews, a new solar power system has been successfully installed at the facility. This upgrade is more than an infrastructure improvement. It is a direct investment in the wellbeing and daily stability of over 500 underprivileged young people who rely on Fountain of Hope for care, meals, and a safe learning environment.

For many months, load shedding presented real challenges. Interruptions to electricity affected meal preparation, study time, and essential day to day operations. With solar power now in place, the center can operate without disruption. Warm meals can be prepared consistently, lighting is reliable, and young people have a stable environment that supports learning, rest, and growth. Energy security translates into peace of mind for both staff and children, allowing the focus to remain where it belongs: nurturing potential and building futures.

Alongside this milestone, important improvements are underway to the girls’ ablution block. The ongoing upgrade is designed to provide greater privacy, improved facilities, and more space. This is a crucial step in promoting dignity, safety, and comfort for the girls at the center. Access to clean, private, and well maintained sanitation facilities is not a luxury. It is a fundamental part of creating an environment where young people feel respected and cared for.

Together, these developments reflect the power of collaboration. When partners come together around a shared commitment to youth wellbeing, the results are tangible and lasting. Sustainable energy solutions and improved facilities do more than solve immediate challenges. They create conditions where young people can thrive with confidence and dignity.

Fountain of Hope continues to stand as a place of care, resilience, and opportunity. With strong partnerships and a shared vision, the future is brighter, powered not only by solar energy, but by collective belief in the potential of every child.
