Empowering Youth Through Sport: Orientation Training Held in Kasama and Luwingu

Young people in Kasama and Luwingu will soon have greater opportunities to participate in structured sport activities following a two day orientation training conducted by Sport in Action (SIA) in partnership with the The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Zambia. The training, held on 18 and 19 March, brought together teachers and staff from the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Youth Resource Centers as part of a collaborative effort to strengthen youth development opportunities through sport.

The orientation formed part of SIAs continued commitment to working alongside government institutions to expand opportunities for young people. By engaging educators and youth centre staff, the training focused on strengthening the delivery of the Hubsite programme and equipping participants with practical approaches to using sport as a tool for youth empowerment and community development. Participants explored how structured sport activities can create safe and inclusive environments where young people build confidence, develop teamwork, and learn essential life skills.

The training also included a practical component that introduced participants to the fundamentals of netball. Participants learned about basic rules, player positions, and the responsibilities of each role on the court. The session concluded with a friendly netball game that allowed participants to apply what they had learned in a lively and engaging environment. One participant shared that the training helped them better understand how sport can be used to guide and support young people in their communities.

The initiative was further strengthened through the support of the Volunteer Zambia Foundation, which provided essential sports equipment to support ongoing activities at the resource centres. The donation included netball goal posts, balls, and other key sports materials that will enable youth centre staff and teachers to continue facilitating sporting activities for young people in their communities.

The training reflects SIAs ongoing commitment to using sport as a tool for youth empowerment, life skills development, and community transformation across Zambia. Through partnerships with government institutions and development partners, the organisation continues to strengthen community sport programmes that create meaningful opportunities for young people.

With trained educators, strengthened partnerships, and new equipment now in place, young people in Kasama and Luwingu are better positioned to benefit from structured sport activities that promote health, leadership, and personal growth.
